Hello, what's this?

Reader, sewer, gamer, painter, watcher of television and films, not quite succeeding at any of them (except maybe the tv and films bit) but trying.

Ohh look what arrived! And look what’s been bound upside down!

A Card From Angela Carter by Susannah Clapp arrived today with some lovely gold foiling on 140gsm woodfree jacket:

Now it may be because I work in Publishing and in the production department at that so I automatically check how the book’s been put together but first thing I noticed was that it’s been bound upside down.

The endpapers are this way (and very nice endpapers they are too):

And the case and jacket are on the other way up!

Whoops! Obviously I’m keeping it so in the future it will be worth millions. In our office this would go on the “shelf of shame”.

I was talking about this film with elizabethlovatt not too long ago. This special horror edition of Empire magazine is how I first found out about it (how could those photographs not be intriguing?) :)
I wish I had a scanner, in the meantime this is a somewhat blurry approximation. And I need to find my DVD of the film (which is great, by the way).

yay! Well played :D

Yeah that’s the scene I’m talking about!
something like this:

I have the special edition in a shiny tin :)

haha you did a good job there!
I really like the film, even though it is very odd as you say, but so not surprising if you’ve read some Carter. My favourite bits are the Devil in the woods and the wedding reception (the story that the girl tells).
My Dad once told me that one of his friends supplied the “wolves” for the film (they were actually big dogs) but I’m not sure whether this is true… I wish it was though!

Oh you should definitely read the Bloody Chamber then! These are fairy tales that Angela Carter actually wrote herself. If you like them then have a look at the film too, it’s called The Company of Wolves, it’s based on one of the short stories. Carter wrote the screenplay too so it’s quite an interesting watch (if you can get over the bad 80s gore!).
Enjoy!

I really love her Bloody Chamber collection, I’ve read them a lot, that’ll be good if you’ve just read all the fairytales that she collected. EDIT: or did you mean you just read the Bloody Chamber? - she’s also edited a Virago book of fairy tales from around the world (which is an excellent read and has a great introduction and afterword). Anyway which ever one you meant I’d recommend the other!
I also would recommend The Magic Toyshop and I love her later “musical hall” kind of novels like Wise Children and Nights at the Circus. They’re both really good!

I’m an arty person. Ok, I write overblown, purple, self indulgent prose, so fucking what?

BBC - BBC Four Programmes - In Their Own Words: British Novelists, Nothing Sacred (1970-1990), Angela Carter Interview

Umm have I mentioned that Angela Carter is my favourite author lately? Well here she is in an interview proving why she’s so wonderful and brilliant. Watch it and then read her books, if you haven’t already.
