Hello, what's this?
Ohh look what arrived! And look what’s been bound upside down!
A Card From Angela Carter by Susannah Clapp arrived today with some lovely gold foiling on 140gsm woodfree jacket:

Now it may be because I work in Publishing and in the production department at that so I automatically check how the book’s been put together but first thing I noticed was that it’s been bound upside down.
The endpapers are this way (and very nice endpapers they are too):

And the case and jacket are on the other way up!
Whoops! Obviously I’m keeping it so in the future it will be worth millions. In our office this would go on the “shelf of shame”.
But we love unicorns.
The production/publishing geek in me loves the bottom right one. Don’t confuse what’s on your screen with what’s going to print. CMYK > RGB

Because I’m sad I know this picture is from this book because we have just reprinted it (in German) at work.
Fact.

So obviously working for a publishing company has its perks in that I get free books sometimes! These are a couple of the latest advances that I’ve been given. London Buildings are by the people behind People Will Always Needs Plates it’s a very pretty architectural book and I helped with repro/PDFing/proofing for this one. It also has some kick ass endpapers and I lovely spot UV on the matt lam cover, don’t ya know…
Anyway… War Correspondent I had absolutely nothing to do with but it looks like a really interesting book, published to coincide with this exhibition at the Imperial War Museum North.
Yay I love my job! Have to say I very much enjoy helping to make books everyday :)
I know! Shame I can’t take the credit for it!
It’s going well I’m really enjoying, learning lots about printing and how books are made. Getting to know all the lingo: GMGs, DPIs, TPS (that’s trimmed page size dontcha know), GSMs, Pantones, Spine blocking, quarter-binding, H&T binding, section stitched, matt laminated gloss paper, woodfree paper, UV Spots and much more! Soon I shall be a massive printing/paper geek :)
I’ve got a couple of reprints to look after now so I can get to know how it all works. All very exciting!
Today the publishing company that I’ve just started working for was on the front page of the bookseller website!
